The Private Security Services Act 2004 was signed into Law on 4th May.  The Act now requires the making of the necessary Commencement Orders BY THE minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.  The Act provides for the establishment of a Private Security Authority to control and supervise individuals and firms providing security services.  The Authority will operate a licensing system for providers of security systems in order to maintain and improve standards within the sector.  The authority will also establish and maintain a publicly accessible register to license holders.  It will issue identity cards to licensees and set standards for training as well as dealing with investigation of complaints against licensees.

The Act also contains provisions allowing for the cross border provision of private security services by similarly licensed individuals or bodies from other EU Member States.
